As we sleepwalk towards ecological disaster, delegating responsibility for decision-making
for up to five years at a time to politicians who, in the main, are blinkered and
self serving, it is surely time that people decided to show a healthy disrespect
for our lawmakers and their laws.
Rather than blame immigrants for reducing our pay packets we should ask ourselves
what is more damaging to a society - the influence of many cultures or the invasions
by British and US forces? Is migration to Europe and the USA a result of past British
and ongoing US imperialism? Or are immigrants trying to improve their lots because
western consumerist greed has led to industrial pollution which is causing ecological
and economic disaster in their countries of origin.
We should aim for an ideal where all members of the diverse world community feel
they have a world in their minds which is worth nurturing. Decisions ought to be
made at local level and world level, not the corporation or nation-state level. The
mental world is not the virtual world of TV or computer games which saps at our senses
of ourselves but our personal representation of the physical and social world which
we encounter in our everyday lives. Only by re-engaging with that world will we see
the true interests of our and species and of its individual members, including our
children. It is the responsibility of every parent to say “No” to the electronic
toys which are the progeny of the rape of our planet. That includes working for the
day when we abandon the means through which I am communicating with you now.
Why do we not ask ourselves, when Blair or Bush condemn an Iranian president for
saying that Israel ought to be wiped ought, why that state was allowed to superimpose
itself on Palestine in 1948. Let Israel collapse; let their be a secular Palestine
for Jews, Arabs and whoever else chooses live there without using religious fairytales
to stake an exclusive claim to the land.
Because it is not enough for art to speak for itself

Don’t let the politicians of Westminster or Washington rule us.
