South Cadbury Environs Project

The South Cadbury Environs Project is a community archaeology project run by volunteers carrying out archaeological investigations of the landscape around South Cadbury hillfort, Somerset. Volunteers participate in all aspects of landscape survey including geophysical and earthwork surveys, test pitting and excavations as well as various post-excavation work, such as pottery analysis. There is something to suit most interests, and training is given for all activities.

The current focus of the project (which has been running from the early 1990s) is to explore the prehistoric landscape in areas we have not looked at previously, but also to look at the development and organisation of the medieval landscape and settlements in the area. Because we are looking at the whole landscape, we cover most periods that are of interest to different people at various times.

You can join in with of our activities, regardless of your experience or lack of it. We work year round, on various days of the week (presently Tuesdays and Thursdays), and sometimes at weekends. Between November and February  and when the weather is bad at other times we work on jobs indoors. You can come along on a day a week basis, a group of days or whatever suits you. We provide the equipment, but you need to ensure you have suitable outdoor clothing and footwear and bring lunch and anything else that you may need outdoors most of the day.

Our annual excavation (September in 2008) is £80 per week for new volunteers, and free in subsequent years.

If you want to join in with the project, we will ask you to join the SCEP Volunteers Association. This costs only £5 per year and means that you are covered by our insurance, get a regular newsletter detailing fieldwork and events, and have priority for other activities that we run.
